"High Tea & Ice Cream Social" Fashion Show was held on 3/31/07 and honored Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools with the “Making a Difference for Women Award.” It was a huge success, raising over $25,000.
The Women Making a Difference Award, formerly called the Women of Distinction Award, honors women who have made outstanding achievements in their professional, business or volunteer activities. Awardees have demonstrated exemplary character, integrity and leadership; and, have been visible and vocal in their field. Their activities relate to at least one of the following areas: economic and social development, education, environment, health, human rights/status of women, and international goodwill and understanding.
Mary Jane Burke was first elected to Marin County Superintendent of Schools in 1994, took office in January of 1995 and was reelected in 1998, 2002 and 2006. Previously she served as a deputy and assistant superintendent for Marin County schools.
She began her education career as a special education teacher and even during her student years at Dominican she was an instructional assistant and volunteer in local schools. She holds four teaching credentials: administrative services, multiple subject, specialists, severely handicapped, and specialist, learning handicapped.
She is the 2007 President of the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA)—an organization of the 58 county superintendents of schools which works with the legislature, Governor, and the major educational and professional associations in formulating policies, setting priorities and providing resources for the students in California.
She is the past-president of the Dominican University of California Alumni Association. She is a member of a number of other boards including School and College Legal Services of California, Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) and the Dominican University Board of Trustees.
She has received numerous honors/awards such as the Spirit of the Family Award from the Marin Family Service Agency, WestED Service Award, Fair Housing Leadership Award and Marin Association of Superintendents Award for Educational Leadership.
